The buyers who attend the shows can see as many as a 1,000 pieces over a two-week period. The challenge is great for the buyers as well. Is it gut feel, years of experience, or something else? And how do they edit the hundreds of potential styles within their theme down to 25-50 or even 100 that they will showcase in New York? Keep in mind that the themes and designs are often decided 9-12 months before the show and 7-8 months before the season. The challenge for the designer is to morph their inspiration into looks and styles that set a new, well-received direction.Īs I attended the shows, I began to wonder how a designer takes this inspiration and converts it into graphic designs and patterns that people will wear. Inspiration for each designer’s theme can come from varied sources, for example, a trip to an exotic location, a favorite movie, graffiti, historic images, or nature. Buyers may visit 50-100 shows over two weeks, and only after they have seen a plethora of looks and styles do they begin the task of deciding which styles they feel will best resonate with their customers. The business side - the stuff of deals and budgets - is not conducted under the tents. They will not make their purchases for another several weeks. Hundreds of styles born from an inspired theme are narrowed down to a much smaller number of pieces that will make the show.įor fashion buyers, who choose the inventory for their stores, it is a chance to get away from the mountains of spreadsheets and data and explore, even hunt for the hidden gem. Designers rely on Fashion Week to drive the creative cycle that might otherwise last indefinitely proportions are finalized and color combinations are refined after months of tinkering. From the most recognizable names in the industry to those who are having their first show, the pace is frenetic and before you know it, the show is over – typically in less than 20 minutes.īeing at Fashion Week means something different, depending on your place in the fashion world. Showtime! One by one, in rapid succession, the models make their way up and back along the runway, while cameras flash and the attendees soak in the latest looks and styles. The music and lighting begin a synchronized dance and the first model hits the runway. Then the lights dim, the chatter dissipates quickly and the show starts. There is chatter coming from all directions as interviews continue and the event staff makes final preparations. Seating at a runway show is an artful mix of showmanship and diplomacy.
